Günter Verheugen, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Enterprise and Industry, and Yoshifumi Matsumura, Japanese Parliamentary Secretary for Economy, Trade and Industry, participated in the EU/Japan Business Round Table on 7 July 2009.
The topics covered the global financial crisis: common challenges for the EU and Japan. The participants shared opinions on the meaning of the financial crisis for companies, the access to finance and the need to restore financial stability, the risk of rising protectionism, the reforms of financial services, innovation and ICT opportunities, mutually beneficial initiatives for stronger trade and investment: new potentials for large corporations and SMEs and energy efficiency as an efficient tool to tackle climate change.
The EU/Japan Business Round Table was created in 1995. Since then, the senior executives of around 50 leading EU and Japanese enterprises meet every year for 'round table' discussions to review the factors affecting all aspects of business cooperation between the EU and Japan, and to make policy recommendations to the European Commission and the Japanese Government.
