Extracts from the EC Midday press briefing by Pia Ahrenkilde Hansen, Deputy Spokesperson for José Manuel Barroso, on the judgment by Germany's highest court on the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty
The European Commission welcomed on 30/06/2009 in Brussels, the judgment by Germany's highest court on the ratification of the Treaty of Lisbon. Pia Ahrenkilde Hansen, Deputy spokesperson of José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, read his statement during the Midday press briefing. He said that with this judgment, the Constitutional Court has cleared the way for a swift conclusion of the German ratification of the treaty. He added that he is confident that they can complete the process of ratification of the Treaty of Lisbon in all countries by the autumn 2009. The Court in Karlsruhe ruled that the Lisbon Treaty is compatible with German law, but demanded changes to domestic legislation before the treaty can be formally ratified.
