Extracts from the joint press briefing by José Manuel Barroso and Seretse Khana Ian Khama, President of Botswana, on the meeting EC/Botswana
On 2 June, Seretse Khana Ian Khama, President of Botswana, visited José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC. Both sides held a joint press briefing following the meeting.
As regards the financial crisis José Manuel Barroso stated:"I am aware of the difficulties Botswana faces because of the financial and economic crisis […] in this sense, we will do our outmost to accelerate and even advance payments under the European Development Fund,". The situation in Africa, and especially in Zimbabwe, was another topic of conversation: "We share concerns about the fragility of the democratic process and also the serious humanitarian situation," said President Barroso. He also insisted on the fact that the Economic Partnership Agreements can be a part of the solution to the economic downturn which is currently affecting African countries.
