DG ECFIN Conference: "Towards a European Foreign Economic Policy": extracts from the keynote address by Joaquín Almunia
Joaquín Almunia, Member of the EC in charge of Economic and Monetary Affairs, opened the conference "Towards a European Foreign Economic Policy" on 6 April 2009 in Brussels.
In the wake of the G20 London summit, this conference debated how the EU's external economic policies should be strengthened, so that Europe can play a global role commensurate with its economic weight. They took stock of the degree of development of some of the EU’s key external economic policies, drawing in some cases a comparison with the US experience, and examining ways to strengthen Europe's position on the international scene.
Top-level international economists shared their views with members of the European Central Bank, and the European Commission representing different external policies, such as trade, development and environment.
