International Conference on Afghanistan, The Hague: extracts from the joint press conference by Rangin Dadfar Spanta, Kai Eide and Maxime Verhagen
Under the auspices of the United Nations and the government of the Afghanistan, a high-level conference on the future of Afghanistan took place on 31st March 2009, in The Hague.
Entitled "the International Conference on Afghanistan: A Comprehensive Strategy" this high level conference aims at injecting new vigor into common efforts and to strengthen international and regional cooperation in support of the Afghan population. The conference will focus in particular on the upcoming elections, governance and institution building as well as setting priorities for economic growth and development. Furthermore, the Conference will look at aid effectiveness and Afghanistan’s political and economic reform agenda.
The conference has been co-chaired by Kai Eide, UN Special Representative to Afghanistan and UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), Rangin Dadfar Spanta, Afghan Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Maxime Verhagen, Dutch Minister for Foreign Affairs, who held a joint press conference.
