In the sidelines of the visit of Abdullah Gül, President of Turkey, to the European Commission, Ali Babacan, Turkish Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Egemen Bağış, Turkish Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator for Turkey’s accession negotiations with the EU, met Olli Rehn, Member of the EC in charge of Enlargement. Talks focused on the state of play in the negotiations on Turkey's entry into the European Union. Turkey began accession talks in 2005, but less than a third of the 35 policy areas that candidates must successfully negotiate have been opened, amid relations with Cyprus and strong opposition to its full membership from some EU members.
