Justice and Home Affairs Council: extracts from the joint press conference by Jiří Pospíšil, Czech Minister for Justice and President in office of the Council, and Jacques Barrot
Jiří Pospíšil, Czech Minister for Justice and President in office of the Council of the EU, and Jacques Barrot, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Justice, Freedom and Security, agreed on the need of preventing conflicts of juridiction in criminal proceedings and had a first discussion on the mechanisms for the exchange of information. The goal is to avoid two courts in two Member States dealing with the same offence.
They also discussed the implementation of the European e-Justice portal, that will be launched by the end of 2009, and the use of videoconferencing, that should make justice more close to citizens and more efficient in the cross-border cases.
Jacques Barrot said that each Member State should apply its own legislation. But he also explained that Member States are transposing in this moment a framework decision that could criminalise negationism. SHOTLISTLINK
