European 112 Day: extracts from the joint press conference by Viviane Reding and Alejo Vidal-Quadras, Vice-President of the EP, and signatures
11 February 2009 marked the second edition of the European 112 Day (11/2) with the aim of informing EU citizens on the European emergency number 112.
The European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council, declared 11 February "European 112 Day" to spread the word about 112 and push national authorities to make the EU's single emergency number more multilingual. Viviane Reding, Member of the EC in charge of Information Society and Media, Alejo Vidal-Quadras, Vice-President of the EP, and a representative of the Council signed the joint tripartite declaration proclaiming the European 112 Day.
Other events were also held at the European Parliament, such as a rescue demonstration by the Parliament Security Unit and the firemen of the Region of Murcia.
The establishment of the European 112 Day follows the success of a Written Declaration on the 112 signed by 530 Members of the EP and a series of initiatives from the European Parliament that gave impulse to the promotion of 112 in the EU. SHOTLISTSHOTLIST
