Extracts from the press briefing by Jonathan Todd, spokesperson of Neelie Kroes, on french support to car industry
At the press briefing on 03/02/2009, Jonathan Todd, spokesperson of Neelie Kroes, Member of the EC in charge of Competition, said that Luc Chatel, French Minister of State to the Minister for the Economy, Industry and Employment, with responsibility for Industry and Consumer Affairs and Government Spokesman, will be visiting her on 04/02/2009 in Brussels.
He told journalists that they understand that the French support for the car industry, will be one of the issues the Minister wants to raise. So far some press reports suggested that part of the French plan would require French carmakers to buy French car components. They have not seen anything to suggest so far that this is more than just rumors or suggestions, adding that for the time being the European Commission had not had any notification of these specific measures.
At the same time, Jonathan Todd announced that the European Commission today authorised France to introduce a temporary scheme to grant reduced-interest loans to businesses producing green products.
The measure is aimed at all sectors of the economy, but the French authorities have been particularly concerned about its car sector. SHOTLIST
