José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC met Vladimir Putin, Russian Prime Minister, in Moscow in a plenary "face-to-face" executive meeting, and gave a joint press conference. This meeting between the European Commission and the Russian government, focuses on the state of bilateral relations between the European Union and Russia.
This meeting is the first to take place in this executive face-to-face format. It follows the invitation issued by Prime Minister Putin in November 2008 at the last EU-Russia summit in Nice.The European Union and Russia are close partners: trade between them almost tripled between 2000 and 2007, and Russia is today the EU's third-placed trading partner after the United States and China. On gas situation, Russian gas accounts for 42% of EU imports and helps fuel its industries and heat its homes. In turn, the Russian economy, including the energy sector, benefits from European advanced technology and investment for its modernization and development.
