Extracts from the press briefing by Ferran Tarradellas Espuny, spokesperson of Andris Piebalgs, on the reopening of the Slovak nuclear power plant
At the EC press briefing on 12 January 2009, Ferran Tarradellas Espuny, spokesperson of Andris Piebalgs, Member of the EC in charge of Energy, made a statement on the reopening of the Bohunice nuclear power plant (Slovakia).
He said that the reopening of the plant would be a serious violation of the treaty, as the shutting down of its reactor was a condition for Slovakia to join the EU in 2004. He said that the EC was helping Slovakia deal with the cutting off of gas supplies resulting from the dispute between Russia and Ukraine and that they would listen to the Slovak Government's arguments. But he added that the EC would take action against the Member State if Slovakia still decided to reopen the nuclear plant. SHOTLIST
