Competitiveness Council (Internal Market): extracts from the joint press conference by Hervé Novelli and Günter Verheugen
The 2910th meeting of the Competitiveness (Internal Market, Industry and Research) was held on 1 and 2 December 2008 in Brussels.
On 1 December, the European Ministers discussed the European Commission's "Recovery Plan for Growth and Jobs" to find a Europe-wide response to the current economic crisis.
Günter Verheugen, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Enterprise and Industry, said at a press conference following the ministerial meeting that there was a broad and strong consensus among Member States that a European framework was needed for the recovery actions and that additional spending would be needed in a targeted and coordinated way. He expressed confidence that the European Council of the following week would endorse the Commission's recovery plan.
Ministers also adopted conclusions on the "Small Business Act" for Europe and on a specific action plan in favour of European SMEs initiated by the French Presidency, which in a context of the slowdown of European economies, brings immediate and targeted solutions for SMEs, particularly by facilitating access to funding, simplifying their administrative burden and enabling them to benefit fully from the opportunities offered by the internal market.
