Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council: extracts from the joint press conference by Luc Chatel and Viviane Reding
Luc Chatel, French Minister of State to the Minister for the Economy, Industry and Employment, with responsibility for Industry and Consumer Affairs and Government Spokesman, chaired the regulatory part of the "Telecommunications" Council. The Ministers examined 4 dossiers: the electronic communications, the international roaming, the universal high-speed internet access and the networks and the internet of the future.
Ministers re-examined the European regulatory framework, and took decisions concerning 2 draft directives from the European Commission reforming the legal framework adopted in 2002, as well as one draft directive creating a European authority for the electronic communications market. These draft texts aim to underpin the rapid changes in the electronic communications sector and respond to new challenges, e.g. easier access to radio-electric frequencies, and measures aimed at protecting consumers as well as reinforcing network safety and integrity.
