Agriculture and Fishceries Council: extracts from the press conference by Mariann Fischer Boel and Michel Barnier, French Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries and President in office of the Council
Mariann Fischer Boel, Member of the EC in charge of Agriculture and Rural Development, explained the results of 24 hours of negotiations on the so called "health check" of the Common Agricultural Policy. She felt an extremely constructive atmosphere among member states and was quite hopeful that it would be possible to conclude in November. She remembered also that the main target of the "health check" is not to protect European agriculture in the old fashioned way, but to make it competitive enough to face the new challenges.
On illegal logging, Michel Barnier, French Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries, announced that an unanimous agreement had been reached to minimise EU imports of illegally harvested timber and timber products by defining the proper framework for importing and marketing wood from third countries.
The ministers also discussed the School Fruit scheme, which aims to provide free fruit and vegetables to school children and should be approved in November. SHOTLISTLINKLINKLINK
