Extracts from the joint press briefing by Gordon Brown, British Prime Minister and José Manuel Barroso, on EU solutions for the world financial crisis
José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, received Gordon Brown, British Prime Minister, to prepare the summit. They both agreed on the need of looking on the long term, once the financial system will be stabilised.
José Manuel Barroso said that Europe has been leading the global response and must continue to do so. He added that "an urgent priority is to further deepen coordination at international level and specifically with the US".
Gordon Brown, explained that Europe has to move to stage two, and must do it working together "with exemplary unity and leadership from President Barroso and President Sarkozy". He explained that stage two is to make sure that the problems of the financial system do no occur again. He said that the IMF has to be rebuilt and called for an early warning system.
On climate change, they both agreed that it is not time to give up the fight. SHOTLIST
