European leaders gathered in Paris for a special summit on the financial crisis. The meeting was organised by Nicolas Sarkozy, President of the French Republic and President in office of the Council of the EU, who invited Gordon Brown, British Prime Minister, Angela Merkel, German Federal Chancellor, Silvio Berlusconi, Italian Prime Minister, José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, Jean-Claude Juncker, Prime Minister of Luxembourg and President of the Eurogroup, and Jean Claude Trichet, President of the European Central Bank.
The Summit's purpose was to prepare the G8 European members' contribution to the forum's forthcoming meetings on the international financial crisis.
At the end of the meeting, the European leaders said that they were ready to support their banks and improve coordination among Member States. They asked for flexibility when applying EU economic rules in case of crisis. And they added that banking executives should be held responsible for the failure of their businesses. SHOTLIST
