Extracts from the press conference by Danuta Hübner on the EC decision to adopt a new Communication on the outermost regions (OR)
On 22 October 2008, Danuta Hübner, Member of the EC in charge of Regional Policy, gave a press conference on the EC decision to adopt a new Communication on the outermost regions, in Brussels.
The European Commission launched a communication on the seven outermost regions of Europe (the Canary Islands, the Azores, Madeira, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique and Réunion), requested by the European Council in December 2007. Insularity, remoteness, small size, economic dependence, etc., the recognition of the specific characteristics of the outermost regions has resulted, since 2007, in the adoption of new programs and measures targeted at them. The new strategy seeks to overcome these handicaps while emphasising how Europe can make the most of the special assets that outermost regions offer: their remarkable biodiversity and wealth of marine ecosystems, their geo-strategic impact, their ideal location for experimentation to combat the effects of climate change and high-quality laboratories.
