Middle East Quartet meeting: round table, extracts from the press conference and statement by Benita Ferrero-Waldner
The Representatives of the Middle East Quartet, Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the UN, Sergey Lavrov, Russian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Condoleezza Rice, Secretary of State of the US, Javier Solana, Secretary General of the Council of the EU and High Representative for CFSP, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, Member of the EC in charge of External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy, met on 26/09/2008 in UN in New York, to discuss the situation in the Middle East. They were joined by Tony Blair, Quartet's Representative for the Middle East.
After their meeting, Benita Ferrero-Waldner gave a statement. The Quartet reaffirmed its support for the bilateral and comprehensive Israeli-Palestinian negotiations and commended the parties for their serious and continuous efforts since the Annapolis Conference. The Quartet also recognized that a meaningful and results-oriented process is under way and called upon the parties to continue to make every effort to conclude an agreement as soon as possible. It noted the significance of this process and the importance of confidentiality in order to preserve its integrity. SHOTLIST
