Visit of Gediminas Kirkilas, Lithuanian Prime Minister, to José Manuel Barroso

Gediminas Kirkilas, Lithuanian Prime Minister, was in Brussels on 17 September 2008 for a working lunch hosted by José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, and in the presence of Andris Piebalgs, Member of the EC in charge of Energy. They held an exchange of views on the European agenda, including the climate change and energy package as well as security of energy supplies to Europe. They also talked about the latest developments in the Georgia/Russia crisis. An important issue of their talks was the closure of the Ignalina power station, which generates 70 percent of Lithuania's power, at the end of 2009. Lithuania has been doubling its efforts to lobby the European Union to be allowed to shut the plant at a slower pace as it argues that the second reactor can work safely until mid-2012. The Lithuanian government hopes that the European Commission will present its position on Lithuania's energy situation to the EU summit in October.
