Troika EU/Turkey: extracts from the joint press conference by Jean-Pierre Jouyet, Olli Rehn and Ali Babacan
At a joint press conference tonight in Brussels, following the ministerial meeting of the EU Troika/Turkey, Jean-Pierre Jouyet, French Minister of State for European Affairs and President in office of the Council, said that the accession negotiations between Turkey and the EU will be led by the Presidency in a fully objective, impartial and fair way. On behalf of the French Presidency, he told the journalists that they propose to open new chapters with Turkey by the end of this year.
Ali Babacan, Turkish Minister for Foreign Affairs, said his country will continue with determination to fulfil its responsibilities for the purpose of full membership to the EU. He stressed the importance of the European support in this process of reforms in which Turkey is currently involved.
Olli Rehn, Member of the EC in charge of Enlargement, for his part, welcomed the recent diplomatic steps undertaken by Turkey in its relations with Armenia and on the Cyprus issue. It is essential that the two communities can agree to a solution which is in line with the principles of the EU and that the new entity will be able to carry the obligations of EU membership, the Commissioner said referring to Cyprus.
