Bernard Kouchner, French Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and President in office of the Council of the EU, Javier Solana, Secretary General of the Council of the EU and High Representative for CFSP, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, Member of the EC in charge of External Relations and European Neighbourhood, and Olli Rehn, Member of the EC in charge of Enlargement, gave a joint press conference after the "General Affairs and External Relations" Council meeting.
The Ministers agreed to set up a special unit to coordinate warship patrols off the coast of Somalia to protect shipping from pirates.
They also gave the green light to deploy at least 200 observers to Georgia by 1 October as part of efforts to secure a Russian troop withdrawal.
On Serbia, The European Union failed to agree to extend new trade benefits to despite a positive report from the chief U.N. war crimes prosecutor on Belgrade's cooperation, but Bernard Kouchner said that a large majority of countries was in favour.
