Extracts from the joint press briefing by Louis Michel and Gilbert Fossoun Houngbo, Togolese Prime Minister, on EU/Togo relations
A conference of Togo's donors hosted by the European Commission was held on 18th and 19th September 2008 in Brussels, to boost the recovery or Togolese economy after 15 years of suspended cooperation with the country's main donors.
Themes related to political and administrative governance, public enterprise reforms, the macro-economic framework, water, energy, infrastructure, sanitation, health and education were to be discussed at the conference. But primarily, it gave the newly appointed Gilbert Fossoun Houngbo, Togolese Prime Minister and former Director of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), a chance of presenting the new governmental programme and of showing strong determination to bring the country back to normal and full cooperation with international partners.
Louis Michel, Member of the EC in charge of Development and Humanitarian Aid, and Gilbert Fossoun Houngbo, Togolese Prime Minister, gave a joint press statement at the occasion of the conference. Louis Michel told journalists that Togo is becoming a political success story. Therefore it is important that they could bring in quickly heavy financial means to show the population it was right to believe in democracy.
