Common Concern for the Arctic Conference: extracts from the joint press conference by Diana Wallis, Vice-President of the EP, Joe Borg and Laurent Stefanini, French Ambassador for the Environment
Diana Wallis, Vice-President of the EP, Joe Borg, Member of the EC in charge of Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, and Laurent Stefanini, French Ambassador for the Environment, gave a joint press conference on the "Common Concern for the Arctic" Conference.
The Nordic Council of Ministers hostied the "Common Concern for the Arctic" Conference in Greenland from 9 to 11 September. The purpose of the event was to encourage stronger international commitment to the Arctic and closer co-operation within the Arctic Region on climate change and globalisation.
During the French Presidency, the EU is reviewing its Arctic policy and a communication is expected to be issued to the Member States in the autumn. EU policies on the environment, fisheries, energy, trade and research already have a direct or indirect impact on the future of the Arctic area and its population.
One objective of the conference was to increase awareness of how EU policy affects conditions in the Arctic. Co-operation between Greenland and the EU was discussed. SHOTLISTSHOTLIST
