Javier Solana, Secretary General of the Council of the EU and High Representative for CFSP, met Lado Gurgenidze, Georgian Prime Minister, on 1 September 2008, just some hours before the beginning of the extraordinary European Council meeting on the situation in Georgia. At the end of the meeting, Javier Solana said that there were three things which were important in relation with Georgia: the political support, the economic support, and the presence on the ground. He added that he would like to see a new civilian monitoring mission deployed in Georgia by October to verify that the six point agreement is complied and also to control the border. Javier Solana explained that sanctions were not on the agenda of the Council, but he explained that the relations with Russia were going to be re-evaluated.
