The European Commission has adopted a proposal for a School Fruit Scheme in light of the dramatic increase in obesity amongst schoolchildren. It aims to spend 90 million Euros a year to provide free fruit and vegetables to schools across the continent, at the stage when their eating habits are formed.
An estimated 22 million children in the EU are overweight and more than 5 millions of these are clinically obese and this figure is expected to rise by 400,000 every year, according to the EU. SHOTLISTLINK
