French Presidency of Council of the EU: extracts from the joint press conference by Nicolas Sarkozy, President of the French Republic and President in office of the Council, Hans-Gert Pöttering, President of the EP, and José Manuel Barroso
Nicolas Sarkozy, President of the French Republic and President in office of the Council of the EU, laid his government's priorities for its European Union Presidency before Members of the EP on 10 July 2008. France took over the rotating Presidency of the EU on 1 July for six months.
Nicolas Sarkozy told the Members of the EP that enlargement would only be possible with the Lisbon Treaty and new institutional arrangements. Many political groups supported the Presidency's priorities but some criticised the lack of social aspects and Nicolas Sarkozy's attendance at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.
