Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council: extracts from the final joint press conference (Transport) by Viviane Reding and Radovan Žerjav, Slovenian Minister for Transport and President in office of the Council
A meeting of the Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council was held in Luxembourg on 12 and 13 June 2008.
The EU Transport Ministers reached an important deal on 13 June 2008 on sharing access to their national road haulage markets.
While hauliers may freely move around the 27-country EU carrying international cargoes, they are largely prevented from stopping on the return trip to use their empty lorry to move cargoes in another EU State, a trade known as cabotage.
At the Council meeting, Ministers agreed to liberalise that trade. The Presidency's proposal determines the allowed scope of cabotage to three hauls inside a host country seven days after a completed international run. The European Commission welcomed the deal. SHOTLIST
