EU/South Africa Troika: joint press conference by Dimitrij Rupel, Slovenian Minister for Foreign Affairs and President in office of the Council, and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, South African Minister for Foreign Affairs, with the participation of Stefano Manservisi
The EU Troika ministerial meeting with South Africa took place in Brdo pri Kranju, Slovenia, on 3 June 2008. On the EU side, it was headed by Dimitrij Rupel, Slovenian Minister for Foreign Affairs and President in office of the Council, and on the South African side by Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, South African Minister for Foreign Affairs. The European Commission was represented by Louis Michel, Member of the EC in charge of Development and Humanitarian Aid.
The partnership between the EU and the Republic of South Africa is based on the Trade, Development and Cooperation Agreement (TDCA) between the European Community and its Member States and the Republic of South Africa, which took effect on 1 May 2004. The EU and the Republic of South Africa entered into a strategic partnership in May 2006, by which both sides wish to strengthen political and other relations in the long run.
The agenda of the ministerial Troika included topics concerning the relations between South Africa and the EU (implementation of the strategic partnership, regional integration and political situation in South Africa); the situation in the region (implementation of the Joint Africa/EU Strategy and the situation in the Great Lakes region, Sudan, Chad, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Somalia and the Comoros); and current international issues (Middle East Peace Process, Western Balkans, EU/China/Africa relations, the European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP), negotiations within the World Trade Organization (WTO)).
After the Troika meeting, Dimitrij Rupel and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma held a joint press conference. Stefano Manservisi, Director-General of DG Development and Relations with African, Caribbean and Pacific States of the European Commission, also took part in the press conference to represent the EC.
