Justice and Home Affairs Council: extracts from the final joint press conference by Dragutin Mate, Slovenian Minister for the Interior and President in office of the Council, and Jacques Barrot
The 2873rd Justice and Home Affairs Council meeting took place on 5 and 6 June 2008 in Luxembourg.
On 5 June, the meeting was chaired by Dragutin Mate, Slovenian Minister for the Interior and President in office of the Council.
The EU Ministers for the Interior reached an agreement with Australia on the processing and transfer of EU-sourced passenger name record data by air carrier. They talked about the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) with the United States and welcomed the fact that it is not asking for more data than the traditional paper version. In relation with the situation of Iraqi refugees, the Commission proposed to mobilise the European Refugees Fund to help those Member States that would like to resettle them. There was no agreement on a proposal to extend the long-term resident status to persons granted international protection like refugees.
