The 2873rd Justice and Home Affairs Council meeting took place on 5 and 6 June 2008 in Luxembourg.
On 5 June, the meeting was chaired by Dragutin Mate, Slovenian Minister for the Interior and President in office of the Council.
The EU Ministers for the Interior approved the Return Directive establishing that illegal migrants can be detained for up to 18 months and face a 5-year ban before coming back to Europe. They agreed on a compromise solution stating the granting of free legal aid. The Ministers also discussed SIS II, the second generation of the Schengen Information System, and welcomed the progress made.
