European Defence Ministers meeting: extracts from the press conference by Karl Erjavec, Slovenian Minister for Defense and President in office of the Council

The EU Ministers for Defence agreed on 26 May 2008 to tackle a shortage of helicopters and called on the EU's armament agency to improve cooperation in crew training, logistics and upgrades of aircrafts to overcome shortages of transport helicopters, which are vital for ferrying troops and equipment quickly over difficult terrain such as Chad or Afghanistan. Karl Erjavec, Slovenian Minister for Defence and President in office of the Council, told journalists that the EU wished in this framework to define how to upgrade the helicopters, train teams and pilots, and how to carry out joint exercises. He said that he believed that this was a very good initiative and that he could also support it very strongly on behalf of Slovenia. The Ministers also reviewed other EU military operations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Chad and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
