"Responding to new social realities: developing an EU Agenda for Opportunities, Access and Solidarity": extracts from the press conference by Vladimír Špidla
The European Commission held a major conference on 5 and 6 May 2008 to discuss how Europe should respond to its current social challenges in an era of globalisation and create discussion on how Europe should renew its social agenda. The event aimed to provide a platform for a social policy dialogue, to open a discussion aimed at public engagement and consensus building in the context of new social realities and ensuring the best way forward, and to produce input that will ultimately feed into the preparation and definition of the renewed Social Agenda in June 2008.
Vladimír Špidla, Member of the EC in charge of Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities, explained the state of play on 5 May at a press conference. He said that the European social model is valid, even if it has to be renewed in order to respond to a changing world. He said that between the proposals that he will be presenting in June there will be a Works Council directive that will be launched even if social partners refuse to give their opinion. PHOTOSHOTLIST
