Extracts from the press conference by Viviane Reding, on the status of Europe's Telecoms
During a press conference, Viviane Reding, Member of the EC in charge of Information Society and Media, presented the 13th Single Telecoms Market Progress Report giving a snapshot of Europe’s Single Telecoms Market as of December 2007, based on facts and figures from national telecoms regulators and market players.
Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands and Sweden are world leaders in broadband deployment with penetration rates over 30% at the end of 2007. The broadband is a success story in Europe.
Beside good progress and achievements in this sector, the Commissioner pointed out that there is still in Europe a problem for building up a real internal market of telecoms. This is due to the fact that there is no consistency in Europe, she said, adding that this lack of regulatory consistency led her to propose the creation of a single European regulatory body to coordinate the telecom regulators in all 27 Member States.
