Extracts from the press conference by Jacques Barrot on road safety and cross-border enforcement
During a press conference, Jacques Barrot, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Transport, outlined European Commission's reform proposals to create a new system for cross-border enforcement of the highway code on the roads of the European Union.
The aim of the proposed directive is to harmonise both technical mechanisms and legal instruments which would allow a European driver to be pursued and penalized for a driving offence committed in another Member State.
The European Commission wants to improve road safety and bring about a positive change to the driving habits of both foreign drivers and Member States residents and put an end to the different ways of dealing with these two categories of road users. SHOTLIST
