Ministerial Conference on the challenges of the EU External Border Management: extracts from the joint press conference by Franco Frattini and Dragutin Mate, Slovenian Minister for Interior and President in office of the Council
Following the Ministerial Conference on the challenges of the EU External Border Management, Franco Frattini, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Justice, Freedom and Security, and Dragutin Mate, Slovenian Minister for Interior and President in office of the Council, gave a joint press conference on EU's external border and the role of Frontex.
Frontex is the external border security agency of the European Union responsible for coordinating the activities of the national border guards in ensuring the security of the EU's borders with non-Member States. Its mission is to help EU Member States implement EU rules on external border control and to coordinate operational cooperation between Member States in the field of external border management.
Dragutin Mate and Franco Frattini said that EU ministers agreed that Frontex had to be strengthened at least in the short-term, and develop better and more effective cooperation with other EU institutions, such as Europol. A long-term vision was necessary for Frontex. He said a future goal of not only common training but the development of a European Border Guard Corps. SHOTLISTLINK
