Visit of Andrej Stritar, Acting Chairman of the High Level Group on Nuclear Safety and Waste Management of the EC, to Andris Piebalgs, and extracts from the joint press conference
Andrej Stritar, Acting Chairman of the High Level Group on Nuclear Safety and Waste Management of the EC, met with Andris Piebalgs in Brussels, and gave a joint press conference.
They discussed nuclear safety and waste management issues, particularly the establishment of common European rules in the field, ahead of the HLG's third meeting on 21 April 2008.
All nuclear operators in the EU operate the reactors in same manner accordingly to all international standards, said Andris Piebalgs. The EU can build on best practices and achieve to the level where it could guarantee to anywhere in the world that the Europeans have the best available practices in all nuclear installations that are operating on the European territory, he added.
The European Commission expects that the work of the Group, being based on the national experience and competence of its high-level members, will help identify the areas where common EU nuclear safety standards would increase safety and public confidence. PHOTOSHOTLIST
