Agriculture and Fisheries Council: extracts from the joint press conference by Iztok Jarc, Slovenian Minister for Agriculture, Forestry and Food, Harm Koster, Executive Director of the Community Fisheries Control Agency, and Joe Borg
Following the Agriculture and Fisheries Council, Iztok Jarc, Slovenian Minister for Agriculture, Forestry and Food, Harm Koster, Executive Director of the Community Fisheries Control Agency, and Joe Borg, member of the EC in charge of Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, gave a joint press conference.
The Slovenian Presidency organized in Brussels the first ministerial debate on the reform of the control system for EU fisheries.
This debate is part of the Commission’s review of the current control regime under Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). Effective control and enforcement of agreed rules are crucial if the CFP is to deliver sustainable fisheries and a profitable and stable European fishing industry.
The Commission therefore intends to propose at the beginning of October 2008 a new policy framework which will take a global and integrated approach to control, from the fisherman to the consumer. It will focus not only on the catches and the landings, but will look at auctions, markets and imports. SHOTLIST
