Promoting multilingualism, a shared commitment: extracts from the joint press briefing by Leonard Orban and Milan Zver, Slovenian Minister for Education and Sport and President in office of the Council
On the initiative of Leonard Orban, Member of the EC in charge of Multilingualism, and the Slovenian presidency, the Ministers of Education of the EU Member States met for a Ministerial Conference on "Promoting Multilingualism: a shared commitment". It was the first meeting ever on this topic at this ministerial level and they discussed the proposal on developing the idea of introducing a "personal adoptive language", a language that should be studied as if it was the mother tongue.
The idea was welcomed by some Member States but also criticized by others that qualified it as an utopia.
Following the meeting, Leonard Orban and Milan Zver, Slovenian Minister for Education and Sport, and President in office of the Council, gave a joint press conference.
