Extracts from the Press briefing by José Manuel Barroso, on the Treaty of Lisbonne ratification in France
At a press briefing, José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, hailed the European ambition of French authorities in adopting the EU new reform treaty.
The adoption of the Lisbon Treaty is a strong sign of the wish to modernise the European institutions for a more efficient and more transparent European Union, said the President of the European Commission.
In being among the first Member States to adopt the Lisbon Treaty, France confirms its commitment to be at the forefront of Europe, he added.
Turning the page on the crisis of 2005 when French voters rejected the European constitution, The French parliament approved the new treaty. France will be the fifth EU country to ratify the Lisbon Treaty, which must be approved in all 27 Member States before it can come into force as planned in 2009. SHOTLIST
