Extracts from the Press briefing by Javier Solana, Secretary General of the Council of the EU and High Representative for CFSP, on the EU military mission to Chad
Javier Solana, Secretary General of the Council of the EU and High Representative for CFSP, told that the EU planned military mission to Chad is on hold after rebels pushed into the capital N'djamena, but the European Union still intends to deploy it.
The EU had planned to start to deploy the 3,700-strong mission to protect civilians in eastern Chad from a spillover of violence from the Darfur region in neighbouring Sudan.
The EU is not going to continue deployment which was stopped in the last few days in order to see how the situation evolves on the ground, he said. The situation is still not clear but they continue to maintain the operation alive, he added. SHOTLIST
