Extracts from the Joint Press conference by Andrej Vizjak, Slovenian Minister for Economy and President in office of the Council, and Andris Piebalgs, on the EU Energy policy
Andris Piebalgs, Member of the EC in charge of Energy, and Andrej Vizjak, Slovenian Minister for Economy, gave a joint press conference on the occasion of the European Sustainable Energy Week.
The European Commission has kicked off its second Sustainable Energy Week, just one week after it unveiled a series of proposals designed to cut the EU's greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2020 compared to 1990 levels. The move underlines the EU's leading role on the world stage in tackling climate change and moving towards a low-carbon society.
The event brings together stakeholders on a local, regional, national and European level to debate strategies for a more sustainable future in terms of renewable energy sources, energy efficiency, clean transport and alternative fuels.
Andris Piebalgs underlined that the energy package is not just about climate change or security of supply, it is also about affordability because oil prices are rising very quickly. SHOTLIST
