Extracts from the joint press briefing by Susan Schwab, United States Trade Representative, and Peter Mandelson
After their bilateral trade talks, Peter Mandelson, Member of the EC in charge of Trade, and Susan Schwab, United States Trade Representative, gave a joint press briefing.
Peter Mandelson said that the European Union and the United States both were feeling that the WTO was rapidly moving toward a moment of truth for the Doha round. He said they hoped that the informal lunch amongst Trade Ministers in Davos at the end of the week would be able to help to clear the roadmap in place in the direction they want these negotiations to lead to. On the controversial issue of new GM technologies, Susan Schwab reaffirmed the US stance that, according to clear scientific evidences, biotechnology is good for human consumption and less environmentally responsible. She expressed concern about the French move to suspend GM maize crops. SHOTLIST
