Visit of Gediminas Kirkilas, Lithuanian Prime Minister, to Günter Verheugen and Joaquín Almunia

Gediminas Kirkilas, Lithuanian Prime Minister, visited the European Commission to reassure Joaquín Almunia, Member of the EC in charge of Economic and Monetary Affairs, that Lithuania would tighten its belt thanks to a recent fiscal discipline law allowing the country to balance the budget in 2009 after lowering the deficit to 0.5 percent of gross domestic product next year. The Baltic country aims at joining the Euro zone in 2010 or 2011. Gediminas Kirkilas also met Günter Verheugen, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Enterprise and Industry, to discuss Lithuania's energy problems. Lithuania is planning to build a new nuclear power plant with Latvia, Estonia and Poland, and it is ready to sign an agreement with Poland to connect the Lithuanian and Polish energy grids.
