Agriculture and Fisheries Council: arrivals and round table
Ministers for Agriculture of the EU met under the Presidency of Jaime Silva, Portuguese Minister for Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, to take a decision on the authorisation to place on the market products containing genetically modified maize. They were also expected to reach an agreement on the possibility of introducing new aids to incentivate the reform of the sugar sector, as the European Commission has not reach the goals fixed in 2005. On relation with the reform of the wine market, Ministers were expected to answer two questions of the Portuguese presidency: one on the ban from adding sugar to wine (chaptalisation), and another on the lift of the restrictions on planting after 2013 to allow competitive producers to expand their production. Finally they were expected to decide about the abolition of the compulsory EU set-aside rate for arable crops for the 2008/09 market year. The proposal is aimed at reducing the current tension on the cereal market, which is characterised by tight supply and historically high prices. SHOTLISTLINK
