Statement by Martin Selmayr, Spokesperson of Viviane Reding, on roaming

The EU's new law to slash the charges for using a mobile phone abroad now applies throughout the EU. Families and companies will all benefit from much cheaper rates. For years, tourists and businesspeople had been unduly penalised for crossing borders within the EU. The charge for using a mobile phone abroad was on average four times higher than for domestic mobile calls, way out of proportion to the cost of providing the service. Even after repeated warnings, operators failed to change their pricing, so the Commission stepped in. This new law to reduce roaming charges within the EU introduces a "Eurotariff", a maximum per-minute cap for calls made and received abroad in Europe (49 and 24 Euro cents respectively, ex VAT). By law, operators had to offer a Eurotariff by 30 July 2007.
