On 5 October 2017, Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the EC, and Karmenu Vella, Member of the EC in charge of Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, gave a joint press conference to open the Our 4th Our Ocean conference. Our Ocean conference is the yearly appointment for leaders, public administrators and businesspeople from all over the globe to interact and find workable solutions for the planet's seas and oceans. Our Ocean 2017 addressed the themes of marine protected areas, sustainable fisheries, marine pollution, and climate change. In her Speech, Federica Mogherini said that oceans are a global common and the feeling of responsibility is better felt than before. Talking about consequences of human action such as pollution and climate change and their consequences like hurricanes, she said this is a man-made problem that needs man-made solutions, as climate change is man-made and needs man-made commitments. She also gave more details on maritime security by mentioning the investment for the satellite monitoring programme Copernicus and the other one for supporting alternative livelihood initiatives on the coastal pirate areas of Somalia. In his speech, Karmenu Vella gave details on the other non financials commitments of the EC to protect the oceans, such as the fight against IUU [Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing], against plastic litter and the work on the sustainable economy. This video shows the entire press conference with the questions and answers session.
