On 5-6 October 2017, the European Union hosted the 4th "Our Ocean" conference, in Valletta, Malta, at the initiative of Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the EC, and Karmenu Vella, Member of the EC in charge of Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. Frans Timmermans, First Vice-President of the EC in charge of Better Regulation, Inter-Institutional Relations, the Rule of Law and the Charter of Fundamental Rights, and Neven Mimica, Member of the EC in charge of International Cooperation and Development, participated in the second day of this conference.
The outcome of the conference was unprecedented and stands to prove that together we can ensure a future for Our Ocean, which is safe, secure, clean and healthy. The EU's 36 commitments alone exceeded EUR 550 million and implied action throughout the globe. Together with its individual Member States and the European Investment Bank, the EU pledged more than EUR 2.8 billion. Other countries tabled over 200 commitments, whilst NGOs, foundations, research institutes and international organisations announced 87 commitments.
This video shows the interventions by Sylvia Earle, Founder and President of Mission Blue Global Coalition, and Emily Penn, co-founder of Pangaea Explorations, oceans advocate and advisor, skipper and leader of eXXpedition.
