The Scientific Committees, managed by the Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety, review and evaluate relevant scientific data to perform risk assessment and provide the European Commission with advice on scientific issues that impact human health and the environment. Since 1978, these Committees have adopted more than a thousand scientific Opinions, most of which served as a basis for regulations, contributing to a more evidence-based EU policy-making.The work of the Scientific Committees supports innovation and growth in the EU while ensuring a high level of health and environmental protection and consumer safety.
Today, there are two Committees: the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) and the Scientific Committee on Health, Environmental and Emerging Risks (SCHEER).
