On 20 December, Marianne Thyssen, Member of the EC in charge of Employment, Social Affairs, Skills and Labour Mobility, gave a press conference, following the publication of the 2016 annual review of Employment and Social Developments in Europe (ESDE). Around 3 million jobs have been created and employment had risen, pushing back poverty. However, unemployment remained high, with huge disparities across Member States. Labour markets and societies would need to adapt to new forms of work. The 2016 edition of this report focused on employment as a means to tackle poverty, digitalisation and the changing world of work, the role of social dialogue, disparities among Member States and the integration of refugees in the labour market.
