On 6 July 2016, Frans Timmermans, First Vice-President of the EC in charge of Better Regulation, Inter-Institutional Relations, the Rule of Law and the Charter of Fundamental Rights, gave a closing statement on the preparation of the Commission Work Programme 2017, at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France. The Parliament set out its recommendations for the European Commission's 2017 Work Programme in a non-legislative resolution voted on this occasion. The need to reflect on what direction the EU should take in the aftermath of the UK’s EU membership referendum was the leitmotiv of this debate.
